BRIGADIER-GENERAL R C MACLACHLAN

Ronald Campbell and Elinor Mary Maclachlan (Residents 1915-1919)

Ronald Campbell Maclachlan was in 1872 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He married Elinor Mary Cox in 1908. In 1911, they were living in Oxford with Elinor’s daughter from her first marriage, Beth de la Pour Trench.

He joined the Rifle Brigade in 1893. He served with the 3rd Battalion in India and later with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, where he took part in the defence of Ladysmith. For his services he was mentioned in despatches and received the Queens Medal and three clasps. He was later posted to India and took part in the Tibet Expedition of 1904.

      

 

He went to France in May 1915 and was severely wounded at Ypres in December 1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and for his services he was granted the D.S.O. in May 1916. He returned to France in November 1916 and on 7 January 1917 was appointed Brigadier-General. On 11 August 1917 whilst visiting the trenches under his charge he was shot at and killed by a German sniper. He is buried in Locre Hospice Cemetery, Heuvelland, West Flanders, Belgium.

There is a plaque to his memory in Winchester Cathedral and a memorial window to him and two brothers in St Mary's church, Newton Valence, Hampshire.

Elinor Mary continued to live at Lang House until 1919. She died in Andover in 1949.
