1939 REGISTER

The 1939 Register recorded all civilians  staying in each house on 29th September 1939.

For more information on the 1939 Register, see https://www.familyhistory.co.uk/1939-register/.

A transcript of the 1939 Register for houses in Chilbolton Avenue is provided below. Using the original documents is not straightforward. Chilbolton Avenue is split across four Enumeration Districts - EDVA, EDVG, EDVI and EDVK. Houses from other nearby streets are therefore interspersed amongst the Chilbolton Avenue houses. For ease of reference to the original documents, this transcript is sequenced by Enumeration District.

The house name transcriptions on Find My Past and Ancestry are full of errors. The house name transcriptions below are corrected versions.

This is a civilian register. Members of households who were members of the military services on the date taken were not recorded. I have attempted to show the male 'head of household' in these cases - they are Major Scaife and Major Harvey. There may have been other military members of the household who are not shown.

The entries for some members of the household are shown as 'Officially Closed'. This is to comply with the 100 year privacy rule. They may be children of the head of household or domestic staff.

Where surnames are shown in brackets, these are the married names of females originally recorded on the register under their single name.

'Unpaid domestic duties' is the standard description of a wife's occupation. 'Paid domestic duties' is the standard description of a servant's occupation. (Don't shoot the messenger)!
