COLONEL FREDERICK H CLEAVER C.B.E., D.S.O.

Colonel Frederick Holden and Janet Nosworthy Cleaver (Residents1932-1950?)

Janet Cleaver (nee Mann) was the sister of Margaret S Adamson (nee Mann), who also lived at Teg Down House.

Frederick Cleaver was born in 1875 in West Derby, Lancashire.

In 1891, aged 15, he was a Naval Cadet at HMS Britannia in Dartmouth, Devon.

In 1900, he joined the Robert's Horse and then transferred to the Kitchener's Horse, units of the British colonial army involved in the Boer War.

He married Janet Nosworthy Mann, sister of Margaret S Mann,  in 1907.

In 1914, he obtained a commission to the 20th Hussars, a cavalry unit and was sent to the Western Front. He was injured after four weeks and declared unfit for service.

However, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and gained the Royal Aero Club Aeronauts Certificate (No. 45) in 1915. He returned to France as a balloon operator, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1917. He was awarded the DSO in 1917 and made a CBE in 1919.

Frederick and Janet moved to Teg Down House in 1932.

Frederick died in 1944. The funeral was held at St. Paul's church, Winchester and he is buried at Magdalen Hill Cemetery (plot E3 46).

Janet left Teg Down House in the 1950's. She died in 1968, and her funeral was at Christ Church, Winchester. (Ancestry gives her grave location as Magdalen Hill plot L3 48. This is an empty space at the cemetery. Was the plot number mis-transcribed, or has the memorial been lost?).
